As the Editor-in-Chief of Methods of Information in Medicine, I am thrilled to extend a warm invitation to selected master's students, nominated by their universities, to participate in our Student Paper Award project!
Our goal is to provide a platform for emerging scholars like you to showcase your research and contribute meaningfully to the academic community. This project is not just a competition; it's an opportunity for you to delve into the world of scholarly publishing and make a lasting impact.

How to Get Involved?
Are you eligible? Please check the eligibility and assessment criteria:
- Master thesis on all topics of biomedical and health informatics presenting new methods or the application of existing methods in a new or innovative way with the aim to improve health.
- The work should represent original research (no review articles or case reports) and can be based on both quantitative and qualitative approaches. It should be no longer than 7,500 words.
- To be eligible for this award, the first author of the paper must have performed the work as a master thesis in an accredited Masters program no longer than one year prior to the time of submission.
- The master student must have been suggested by the University (supervisor or program director), and the work has not been published or is under review for publication.
Judging for this annual award will be done by an anonymous panel made up of our Editorial Board members and Referees.
Criteria of assessment
Scientific novelty:
High degree of novelty in a topic of timely interest.
Introduction:
The introduction clarifies the state of the art and leads to a clear problem description or scientific gap that motivates the study. Aim/research questions are clearly stated.
Methodology:
The choice and application of scientific methods and techniques are clearly motivated and described and the application of the chosen methods and techniques is done in accordance with the demands of said methods and techniques.
Results:
The results are presented in a well-structured, logical, and objective manner and are of a high magnitude and quality so that well-grounded conclusions of relevance for the research question can be made.
Discussion:
Strength and limitations as well as generalizability and significance of the results are thoroughly discussed in relation to previous research.
Structure and coherence:
There is a clear logical connection between the aim, research question, methods used, results and conclusion and the study is very well written.
Are you ready to submit?
- Write your manuscript according to the journal’s author instructions.
- Please mention that your submission is for the Student Award, mention the name of your master’s program and university as well as the name of your program director/supervisor in the cover letter.
- Go to the journal’s submission system and follow the instructions. Submit your manuscript as category “Original Article for a Focus Theme.
- There will be no page or color figure fee charged for accepted papers.
